Michael Scoggins on Flavorpill
Saturday, October 18th, 2008
The latest cover of San Francisco’s Flavorpill–a weekly guide to cultural happenings in the city–greets readers with a resounding “Bong”, although the artwork has nothing to do with the state’s recent pro-pot Supreme Court ruling. Rather, the bong in question comes from Michael Scoggins‘ plus-sized drawing, “Clash Bang, Crash, Bong!,” a dynamic ode to adolescence, onomatopoeia, and the American way. Not only does the 2008 work on paper grace the cover of Flavorpill, but it also currently hangs in So American it Hurts, Scoggins’ artist’s first solo exhibition at Quality Pictures. Described by the Willamette Week as “perfectly timed… sly and satirical,” So American it Hurts remains on view through November 1.
